Part 1: Getting prepared for making the decision this summer (Time frame: June – July)
Go through the following information to familiarize yourself with the program, make sure your school contact info is correct/updated, get some info about software (you won’t need to buy any!), and to be aware of the free/reduced lunch application. If you can, please attend one of the BYOL Family Information Meeting Nights listed above during July and August this summer.
Important! Be sure to make sure your contact info is updated in your JMC Parent Portal! The emails listed will be used for communications that are sent out this summer! Instructions (if you need them) are at this link!
General information along with Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and the answers to those questions are on this online Google Slideshow – you should be able to view the slides like a PowerPoint, and select slides you wish to view, or view them full-screen like a presentation. Definitely read through the information, particularly starting with slide 14. Slide #24 has the minimum requirements for laptops.
Families of students that will be in 6th grade and/or 10th grade for the 2024-2025 school year (and students new to the Dover-Eyota District and will be in 6-12 grade in 2024-2025) that wish to use the $100 discount voucher will have a choice of some different laptops with price guarantees, or having the option of choosing any laptop CDW-G offers (as long as it meets the schools’ requirements) and receive a $100 discount (Remember! ALL discount-eligible orders MUST be made through the school using the form in Step 3 at the bottom of this page when that becomes active).
The price guaranteed pricing options will include at least one option from Minnesota Tech for Success (MnTFS) which are refurbished laptops, as well as four new laptop models through a special purchasing agreement with CDW-G.
NOTE – The updated version of the laptop purchase options for ’23-’24 is finalized! The list of the laptops for 2023-2024 can be viewed on this document (24-25 info is coming very soon!): 2024-2025 Laptop purchase options using the $100 Discount
Note: For Free or Reduced Lunch Families – Application for Educational Benefits First – be sure that you have completed the new Application for Educational Benefits (the “Free or Reduced Lunch” application). The application is available on D-E’s Food and Nutrition web page at this link: Application for Educational Benefits (the “Free or Reduced Lunch” application Information and link to the Application. NOTE that the application is usually updated around July 1 Then, to receive the additional discount once you have qualified for one of these programs, please be sure to make your laptop selection (see below in the “Make Your Selection” area once that goes “live” around mid to late July) of either the CDW-G or the MnTFS options, then complete the Request for Additional Discount form for Free or Reduced Lunch families at this link: https://goo.gl/7hS3qV . Bryan Berg will receive that request and coordinate the additional price reduction for your laptop.
Did you know? There is a program that can help pay for internet access for your residence if you meet the criteria, and qualifying for Free or Reduced Lunch meets the criteria? It’s called the Affordable Connectivity Program. You can out more about it and submit an application online here: https://www.fcc.gov/acp
Software Info and download/installation links and instructions for family-owned laptops (You do not need to purchase any software!) Basic information regarding Google and Office365/Teams accounts, along with additional free software that they can install on their family purchased laptops and then use for their projects at school (and personal projects as well) can be found on this document: BYOD Software Links and installers. Note that all students in 6th grade through 12th grade have been assigned Google Accounts as well as Office 365 accounts. The account information is usually provided at the start of the school year to the 6th graders (and to students new to the district). |
Part 2: The options for families (Time frame: July – early August)
The steps for making your decision for your choice of the 6 BYOD options should be simple and very similar to what we have done the last few years. There will be no special websites, and no special codes. Instead, there will be a simple form that will be made available on this webpage: see below the options list (near the bottom of this web page in the “Make Your Selection” area) for the link to the online BYOD selection form. The form won’t be active until sometime around the latter half of July Each family will make their selection for students using that form of one of the 6 BYOD program options, including the option of requesting a school-owned laptop. Bryan Berg will receive that information and will coordinate your choice: ordering of the laptop you selected; confirm with you that you will be using a laptop you already own (but still meet required specs); confirm you are ordering a laptop outside of those that qualify for the discounts (but still meet required specs); or coordinate a school-owned laptop for your son or daughter to use at school. Any laptops ordered through the school from CDW-G or MnCFS (which must be done on your behalf by the school for the school to provide the $100 discount) will be delivered to the school where they can be paid for and picked up (still in their boxes, if applicable). School-owned laptops will be available for pickup a few days before the start of the school year.
The 6 options you will have on the D-E BYOD Online Decision Form will be as follows (you will be choosing one of the options for each student you have that’s eligible for the BYOD program this year): |
Option 1: You wish to purchase a new laptop from the three that CDW-G is offering with guaranteed pricing (these will have a $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school) The list of those laptops can be viewed on this document: 2024-2025 Laptop Purchase options using the $100 Discount – this document (at the bottom of it) also has information regarding the warranty for these laptops, as well as a link to the set-up process for a new Windows laptop If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 2: You wish to purchase one of the the refurbished laptop options from MnTFS (also includes $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school) The Minnesota Tech for Success laptop option is shown on this document: 2024-2025 Laptop Purchase options using the $100 Discount – this document also has information regarding the warranty for these MnTFS laptops, as well as a link to the set-up process for a new Windows laptop. If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 3: You wish purchase a new laptop from any laptop (that meets school requirements) that CDW-G is offering but without guaranteed pricing (these will have a $100 discount as long as the purchase is made through the school) While there are too many options from CDW-G to list, as a reference, please be sure to look at the bottom of the 2024-2025 Laptop Purchase options using the $100 Discount – because information regarding the warranty for the CDW-G Lenovo and HP laptops, as well as a link to the set-up process for a new Windows laptop is included. Do note that a couple of laptop models that were popular last year weren’t part of the “price guarantee” options from CDW-G for this year, but they may still be available from CDW-G. Do note that quantities may be limited, and prices can change for any laptop that’s not a part of the “price guarantee” for our BYOD program. Be sure your laptop choice meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at bryanberg@deschools.org), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop that is compatible with the latest OS (Windows 11, or for Macintosh, Mac OS 15 (“Sequoia”) or newer). Minimum specs are on slide 24 of this online slideshow: online Google Slideshow. A list of Macintosh models compatible with MacOS 15 Sequoia (and other Mac OS Versions) is at this website: https://www.macworld.com/article/673697/what-version-of-macos-can-my-mac-run.html) If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 4: You decided to use a laptop that you already own. Please make sure your laptop meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at bryanberg@deschools.org), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop that is compatible with the latest OS (Windows 11, or for Macintosh, Mac OS 13 (“Ventura”) or newer). Minimum specs are on slide 24 of this online slideshow: online Google Slideshow. A partial list of older laptops that are compatible with Windows 11: Windows 11 Compatible Laptops & Desktop PCs (from techviral.net), and more information about checking on older laptop compatibility is available on this Windows 11 info document. a list of Macintosh models compatible with MacOS 15 Sequoia (and other Mac OS Versions) is at this website: https://www.macworld.com/article/673697/what-version-of-macos-can-my-mac-run.html) If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, be sure to review the BYOD Software Links and installers document
Option 5: You decided to purchase a computer other than those available in Options 1-3 (no discount is provided for this option). Please make sure your purchase meets the minimum specs (check with Bryan by emailing him at bryanberg@deschools.org), and is a Windows or Macintosh laptop that is compatible with the latest OS (Windows 11, or for Macintosh, Mac OS 13 (“Ventura”) or newer).
Option 6: You decide to use a school-owned laptop A laptop will be set-up by the school for your student to use for the school year. Note that even with this option, the students and their families are responsible for damages/repairs. * For more about this option, please look through and become familiar with the 1:1 laptop handbook: One to One Laptop Handbook, including the Protection Plan information which begins on Page 7 of the handbook. If this is the option you chose using the form in Part 3 once the form becomes active, you will not have to worry about software installation. School-owned laptops will come with software already installed on them. |
